“A Drop of Milk in the Ocean” 2025 is a performance rooted in Mongolian oral storytelling traditions. While knotting blue cotton threads, gradually white horse mane will be added as the artist unfolds an improvised story as a living ritual and spiritual trial—a weaving together of story, thread, and shared breath—an embodied expansion of her biennale work, “ᠣᠩᠭᠤᠳ (Ongod)” (2025). The performance is both narration and invocation as the setting of the performance functions as a cosmogram, exploring the resurgence of ancestral Mongolian knowledge and worldview—like seeds of healing. In her preparatory process, Zezegmaa “ferments” epic tales, folktales, and cosmogonies, internalizing the voices of ancestral spirits gathered through deep immersion in contemporary media such as lectures given by ancestral spirits through the medium of podcasts.
During the performance, Mongolian milk tea, suutei tsai, is served—a gesture of offering and connection, grounding the audience in an intimate act of hospitality while invoking and embodying ancestral wisdom.
