Location: Olimjon Caravanserai

The women of Shiru Shakar embody the rhythm of Bukhara’s memory. Formed by a group of retired performers, the ensemble actively resists the marginalisation often faced by elder women.  Through traditional dance and polyphonic singing, they carry rituals inherited from older generations, keeping them alive. Their voices tell stories of the moments that accompany life’s biggest celebrations — preparing a bride for her wedding or welcoming a newborn child. Their performances are marked by the energy of collective movement — women standing side by side, singing and dancing together as they once did in courtyards and at community gatherings. Their performance will unfold against the backdrop of Saule Suleimenova’s Kutadgu Bilig, which inspired by Shiru Shakar, also becomes their stage setting.
