This performance by two dancers from the Uzbek state dance company Bahor Ensemble is the centrepiece of Liu Chuang’s film Wet Metal. In the film, they use the ‘Cotton Dance’ to diagnose and treat an embodied robot that has lost cognitive function during interstellar mining. Featuring dancers Oykhon Muminova and Zarina Yokubova, and guided by choreographer Gulnora Nizamova, the performance pays respect to the rich dance legacy of Uzbekistan and to the legendary founder of the Bahor Ensemble, Mukarram Turgunbaeva, who originally choreographed the ‘Cotton Dance’ in the 1930s. Muminova and Yokubova’s performance takes place in the courtyard of the nineteenth century Caravanserai Ayozjon, atop the large-scale mosaic created by Marina Perez Simão and Bakhtiyar Babamuradov.
